[nancy greene ski league] [message
from nancy] Greetings from Sun Peaks! I hope you are all getting ready for a great ski season, and looking forward to having a good time in the Nancy Greene Ski League. Back in the fall of 1967 when I was asked to lend my name to a new program for kids, little did I know that the program would still be going strong so many years later. I'm sure it is because the original philosophy of an introduction to racing where the emphasis is on team participation rather than individual competition is so right for when kids are just beginning. The Nancy Greene Ski League started in Southern Ontario in 1968, the year that I won the Olympics. After the Olympics we went to Collingwoood for a race and I met and skied with the winning team from one of the clubs. They gave me an autographed photo of their team -- and years later I noticed it was signed by eight year old Stephen Podborski! The day I skied with them, of course, I was much better than they were. Twenty-five years later they invited me to a re-union race -- this time the only one who was slower than me was on a snowboard! It was really wonderful to see how the skiers on that team still had so much in common, especially their life long love of skiing. Many of that original team are now parents themselves and are coaching in the Nancy Greene Ski League as their kids go through the program. It has been a real pleasure to be the Honourary Chairman of the Nancy Greene Ski League throughout the years and to have met and skied with so many young, and not so young participants in the program. Hopefully I will have the opportunity to meet you as well. If you ever get the chance to come to Sun Peaks Resort, be sure to look me up. Good luck to you all. Have fun racing! Sincerely, |
